Chapter 9

Damien

“Hello Damien,” Lucifer said with a smile. “Or should I call you Azazel?”

I stood there in stunned silence. I hadn’t expected him to know who I was already. “How did you know it was me?”

Lucifer shrugged. “When you went on your little renegade mission to protect the mark bearer, I wracked my brains trying to figure out who you were. Who would be disloyal enough to turn against me? In particular, who would dare to defend the bearer of the mark of the covenant? Frankly, I had completely forgotten about you. And, seeing as you were actually innocent, I had no ill will towards you. As a matter of fact, I sent some demons to find you in the desert only a few centuries ago, but you were nowhere to be found. I’d assumed you’d simply been buried by the sands of time or somehow found a way to kill yourself.” He leaned forward and clasped his hands on the desk. “But after some thinking, I realized that you must have been the one who turned against me.”

“And how’d you know that I go by Damien?” My hands began to tremble slightly. Lucifer might kill me before I ever got a chance to tell him what I knew.

“After figuring out who you were, I sent some demons to find where you lived. I heard the old man’s warning about refraining from harming those associated with the mark bearer, but I figured I’d at least keep tabs on you. You did a good job of hiding your identity and remaining low-profile, but we have resources that the humans don’t. Eventually, we caught wind of a powerful individual who was frighteningly charming, almost demonically so. They returned with some photos of you, and I recognized your face immediately. However, imagine my surprise when I found out that you were missing and presumed dead. At first, I thought you were hiding from me, but no one could find you. Despite that, news travels fast in hell, and when I heard that someone was here claiming to be Belial, whom I know to be dead, I figured it had to be you.”

I slowly reached for my blade only to realize I didn’t have one. Damn it. I should have found some kind of weapon before coming here. I briefly wondered where Paul had stashed my blade after burying me. It wasn’t on my person when I woke up. “So what? You’re just going to kill me now?”

He chuckled and relaxed in his chair. I heard the rustle of a chain from beneath the desk. I knew that he was chained to the ground, cursed to remain in hell for eternity. But I had no idea how long that chain was. I gazed around the room, assuming it was long enough that he could access any of the books lining the walls. That meant it was definitely long enough to reach me.

“I haven’t decided what I’m going to do with you yet. However, I’m immensely curious as to why you’re here.
